Selina later ends things with Curtis after this incident, because Curtis found her story to be too unbelievable. Willits returned to Home and Away in 1995–1996, and returned for an additional stint in 1997. In 1998 Willits filmed a conclusion to Steven's storyline on location in the UK. Deckert told The Sun-Herald that some viewers were shocked at her real appearance as they thought Selina looked "like such a dog" in the show. Selina begins looking for a new boyfriend and sets her sights on Curtis Reed. Shannon, Curtis' adopted sister and girlfriend is annoyed and this and they fight at a party. Irene's grandson, Paul is kidnapped, so Selina and Joey Rainbow, both visit Saul's commune to find out the truth. Selina begins studying nursing at University and is placed at Northern Districts' hospital. Selina is shocked to discovers that the hospital's computer repairman is Steven. He makes it clear he still loves Selina but she is still with Jesse. However, Selina cannot deny her feelings for Steven and they end up back together before she agrees to marry him.

Dodge later turns up alive and kidnaps Kelly, when Steven tracks them down they start fighting on the edge of a cliff. In the end they both roll over the edge of the cliff, Steven survives but Dodge remained unfound. Steven leaves Pippa a note and flees the town, without saying goodbye to his closest family member Sally.
They are shocked and tell him he's a better person than that. Dodge has a grudge against Roo Stewart's boyfriend Simon Yates , who he tries to pin the blame on over the arson attack. He manipulates Steven into attacking him on the beach and vowing revenge. Dodge steals a car and crashes it, Steven takes the blame to protect him, but Dodge reveals it was him and vows to change. Just as everyone trusts him again, he drunkenly confesses to setting the fire that killed Phillip.

After Murdoch's body is found after a bushfire, Irene and Selina find themselves suspects for his murder but are cleared. Steven returns again later and reveals he and Selina have married, he returns again the following year and announces he and Selina broke up and he was with someone new. Their colleague opined that Steven was the "brightest foster kid" that Pippa had ever fostered. Upon her arrival, Selina was described as being a tearaway with an attitude. Selina also had a reputation for being the "town tramp" and Deckert explained that while it was a pretty true description, it was not exactly Selina's fault.

In 1996, Deckert fell ill and actress Louise Crawford played Selina during Deckert's temporary absence. In mid-1997, speculation grew around Deckert and whether she had quit the serial, though the Home and Away publicity department did not confirm nor deny her departure. In 1987 over three hundred actors auditioned for the roles of the Fletcher's foster children. Eventually sixteen-year-old Adam Willits was offered the part of Steven.
Steven had a drawn out relationship with his student Selina Roberts , their relationship takes many "twists" along the way. Deckert said it was a "typical soap wedding" with many mishappenings. The conclusion to their storyline before Steven's final departure of the nineties, was filmed in Ironbridge, Shropshire. It was the first ever episode to be filmed abroad for the serial. Selina develops a crush on her teacher Luke Cunningham and is known for an allegedly promiscuous nature. Jack Wilson is attracted to her and they begin dating and attend the school formal together.
Selina later decides to clean up her act and she begins dating Jack Wilson, who she believes is her soul mate. Selina has been central to many "bizarre" storylines such as having a miscarriage at school, being sexually harassed, stalked and entering a relationship with her school teacher Steven Matheson. Deckert earned a nomination for "Most Popular Actress" at the Logie Awards, for her portrayal of Selina. In another storyline school secretary Joanne Brennan starts up an obsessive campaign to seduce Steven. Joseph said "She goes out of her way to wreck any other romance he has - and ends up stalking him." Joanne continues her "bitchy" campaign until she departs.
Steven first appears on screen in the pilot when he and his foster family sit down to celebrate Tom's 40th birthday. Later, when Tom announces to the family that he is being retrenched, Steven offers to live elsewhere as he feels the Fletchers will be unable to afford looking after him. The family eventually relocate from The city to country town Summer Bay. Early into the Fletchers' arrival Steven manages to win the approval of foster brother Frank Morgan , who has been suspicious of him since his arrival. Steven also manages to befriend local tomboy Bobby Simpson , who later joins the family. Steven asks Frank for advice, he believes no one sees him as a grown up and just as a boy, he starts shaving and trying new things to look older.
Selina is shaken by this and tells Steven she is not ready to marry him and leaves the Bay to travel. Selina contracts malaria whilst in Africa and is brought Ironbridge by Geoffrey Burns to convalesce. Irene and Marilyn Chambers fly over to help care for her and Irene calls Steven. He and Selina rekindle their relationship and she agrees to marry him and let him travel with her. Irene's grandson, Paul is kidnapped, so Selina and Joey Rainbow (Alex O'Han) both visit Saul's commune to find out the truth.
